Exciting things have been happening at Level Best lately! If you’ve walked past our new home on St John’s Street, you’ll have seen our café full of people enjoying delicious homemade breakfasts, lunches, scones, and cakes.
We’ve loved welcoming Level Best friends and meeting lots of new visitors over the last few months and seeing the café busier than we could have imagined.
Here’s a small round-up of a very busy few months for Level Best Enterprises…
In April we celebrated with a soft launch party for a list of exclusive guests that included special friends, supporters, artists, and creatives. After 15 happy years at Darcy House, it was sad to leave, but opening the doors at our new home marked the beginning of a brand-new and exciting chapter for our staff and trainees who are loving our amazing new facilities. You can find out more about our journey to our new home here.
Once we had settled in, we followed up our soft launch with an official opening by best-selling children’s author Nick Butterworth, creator of Percy the Park Keeper books. Nick led an official cutting of the ribbon ceremony with a moving presentation before running a live drawing session for trainees and visitors. As well as a barbecue, cake decorating, and music, we had demonstrations across all our activities, enjoyed by a full house of guests. Thank you to everyone who attended and to Team Level Best for your hard work in making it happen.

In June, we had our first hired exhibition in our new gallery space. Colchester artist Peter Porteous-Butler staged his debut solo exhibition ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’. The exhibition was such a success, we extended it for a second month and Peter was overwhelmed by the interest in his work with lots of sales and future commissions. We are delighted that our gallery space is booked through to 2024. Currently, we have Abbie Cairns exhibiting work from the third year of her PhD until August 30th. Read more about Abbie’s work here.
Amongst all the excitement, Level Best has caught the eye of the local press. Notable pieces of press coverage include a front-page article in the Essex County Standard, and a double-page spread in the Colchester Gazette featuring photos from the launch party. Our wildflower project, aiming to encourage biodiversity in Colchester, in partnership with the Park Rangers has kicked Colchester into full bloom and appeared in the Gazette and online. It’s certainly been busy, and we’re not slowing down! In the next few weeks, we will be launching our Corporate Sponsorship Programme and would love to hear from any potential sponsors in the business community.
Keep an eye on our Instagram for daily Trainee updates and upcoming projects! In the meantime, we’d love to welcome you into the café for breakfast, lunch, or coffee and cake! We look forward to seeing you!
