Level Best Enterprises is lucky to have its own allotment plot, which sits just a 15-minute walk away from our city centre hub.
Located on a community growing space occupied by over 100 plots and growers, our allotment is the perfect place for our trainees to thrive and grow in Essex nature. Our trainees love getting their gardening gloves on and learning how to grow their own fruits, vegetables, and flowers for use in our local Colchester cafe, and which can also be found in the homemade jams, chutneys, pickles and more that make up our Seasonal produce.
Hands on gardening experience for people with disabilities
Planting is just the start, however. Our trainees are encouraged to get involved in a wide range of gardening activities, including composting, harvesting, seed saving, building structures and learning about plant cycles.
To help keep Level Best Enterprises colourful throughout the year, our Gardening trainees create and maintain beautiful window box displays that are enjoyed by visitors and bees alike! We also get involved with many local initiatives, including Anglia in Bloom and Colchester in Bloom – both of which we have won awards for in past years.
Volunteering with the Park Rangers at Colchester Castle Park
Another exciting element of our Gardening enterprise is the opportunity to work alongside the Park Rangers in the grounds of Colchester Castle Park. Trainees take part in several important jobs around the park including maintaining the Imola Pond area, planting flowers, sweeping paths and plot preparation. Our gardening trainees also enjoy local nature trails and foraging trips, giving them the chance to embrace their wild side and learn more about what nature has to offer.
Park Ranger sessions run on Thursday mornings while allotment sessions are available throughout the week, with Level Best staff there to support the trainees and supply all the tools.
